Concept Explanation

Circular Arrangement Facing Outside

Seating Arrangement:  These type of questions are the most common type in most of the competitive examinations where are reasoning of the candidate is to be analysed. These concepts involve the arrangement of objects/ people in various ways. Generally one problem is followed by five to six questions so it is always advantageous to attempt the seating arrangement questions in the examination, because by solving one problem we are fetching more marks than by solving other single questions.

Circular Arrangement Facing Outside: In facing away from the center that is outside, left means anticlockwise while right means clockwise direction. For the given problem we will draw a diagram depicting the position of the objects or people. We will then analyse the position of the various objects or the people and will then answer the questions.

Illustration: Study the following information to answer the question:

P, Q, R, S, T and U are seated in a circle facing in the opposite direction to the center.

P is second to the right of S, who is third to the left of U, R is third to the right of T and is not immediate neighbour of U

Question: What is the position of R with respect to Q?

A. Second to the left                    B. Third to the right                  C. Second to the right                          D. Third to the left

Answer: C

Solution: .In facing away from the center that is outside, left means anticlockwise while right means clockwise direction. So according to this the valid diagram will be

  • P is second to the right of S, who is third to the left of U, R is third to the right of T and is not immediate neighbour of U
  • As it is given in the question P is second to the right of S but they are facing outside the center so P will be in clockwise direction to S and there will be one person in between P and S
  • Now S is third to the left of U but they are facing outside the center so U will be in anti-clockwise direction to S and there will be two person in between U and S
  • As R is third to the right of T but they are facing outside the center so T will be in clockwise direction to R and there will be two persons in between R and T and R is is not immediate neighbour of U so the position of R will be between S and P.
  • From the diagram we can see that the position of R with respect to Q. Now counting from Q in clockwise direction R is at the second position. So we can say that R is Second to the right of Q. Hence option C is Correct.
